About Jordan Shlain.
Dr. Jordan Shlain is a San Francisco internist widely recognized as an originator of concierge medicine. He earned a BS in anatomy and physiology from UC Berkeley in 1989 and his MD from Georgetown University in 1994, completing an Internal Medicine residency at California Pacific Medical Center and UC San Francisco in 1997. Before medical school he taught high school sciences in rural Kenya through the Harvard-affiliated WorldTeach program.
In 2002 Dr. Shlain founded Private Medical, which has grown into one of the country's longest-running concierge practices and serves more than 1,000 member families across multiple US locations. His earlier ventures include SeniorWell (1996), a telemedicine service for geriatric patients, and San Francisco On Call Medical Group (1999), which evolved into Current Health. In 2008 he founded HealthLoop, an AI-powered patient engagement platform that earned one of the first digital healthcare patents in 2013; it was acquired by GetWellNetwork in 2018.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Shlain serves on the boards of the Equinox Group and the NYU Tisch Center for Hospitality in Healthcare. He co-founded Eat Real, a K-12 nutrition nonprofit, in 2019, and co-launched DOC — an invitation-only health and longevity conference — in 2025. He has served on San Francisco's Health Services Board (2010-2014) and its Entertainment Commission (2004-2005). During the COVID-19 pandemic he volunteered at frontline facilities including NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, and contributes commentary to outlets including the New York Times, USA Today, and the BBC.
He sits on the PPA Board as a founding voice on the economics of physician-led practice and the policy environment shaping membership-based medicine.
